Installation, Maintenance and Quality Assurance
Nosings and treads should only be fitted to steps which are sound and level. If the steps need to be repaired or levelled this must be carried out before fixing, allowing for any concrete or screed etc to fully cure before laying the nosings / treads.
We recommend that all treads are screw fixed and that where a chosen profile has a going greater than 100mm an adhesive is also used as bedding medium.
For concrete, stone terrazzo etc, place the pre-drilled nosing / tread on the step and mark off the hole positions. Remove the nosing / tread, drill the fixing holes to the required depth, insert plastic plugs and sweep off all drill dust. If using adhesives as well as screws, apply it to the underside of the nosing / tread leaving a margin at the back edge and at the ends to prevent unnecessary oozing. Reposition the nosing / tread and secure with screws.
Fixing to timber requires screws only, whereas fixing to steel requires either a nut, bolt and washer assembly or a self-tapping screw as preferred.
All nosings / treads can be supplied pre-drilled and countersunk by request for use of No.8 screws. As the heads will remain exposed in the finished installation, stainless steel fixings are recommended. Holes are drilled 75mm in from the ends and then between 225mm and 300mm centres depending on the length of the nosing / tread. The pattern of the holes, i.e., whether in a single line, in pairs or staggered, is determined by the dimensions of each particular profile. Further details are available on request.
To ensure that effective slip-resistance and optimum step edge definition is maintained, tread inserts and riser strips must be cleaned at least weekly.
Composition PVC inserts require particular scrubbing, as the nature of the material is more easily marked than say, carborundum. The mechanically abraded surfaces of PVC inserts, which is necessary for providing slip-resistance, also readily retains dirt. For minimal maintenance, carborundum inserts are recommended.
For best results, scrub with a solution of propriety floor cleaner and warm water. Difficult to remove marks may require extra scrubbing using a cream cleaner or similar.
After cleaning, remove any excess water and allow the nosings / reads to fully dry before allowing pedestrian access.
If the aluminium profile requires buffing, the best results are achieved by using a fine grade (000 gauge) wire wool.
DO NOT USE WAXES OR POLISHING MEDIA that may compromise slip-resistance.
With many years of manufacturing experience behind us, our products must, by now, have been installed in just about every environment imaginable. Our safety nosings and treads have provided improved pedestrian safety In areas ranging from light to heavy foot traffic, in food factories, off-shore platforms, railway stations, schools and on all internal and external stair types. Little wonder then that when it comes to the issue of quality, we feel it safe to say that our longevity is an endorsement of both product performance and customer satisfaction. We hope this remains one of the methods by which clients assess us, although we understand that for many a more formal method of assuring quality is required, which is why our Quality Management System is certified to ISO9001: 2008.
In addition to quality assurance, we offer anti-slip assurance in the form of independent test results on all of our infilling types: all have been subject to the pendulum/4S test and TM144 1999 (London Underground) with the results in each case being in excess of the HS&E recommendations for surface roughness. Indeed, in the instance of Carborundum, our most popular infilling material, tests confirm an extremely low potential for slip in dry, wet and even oily conditions.
